Overview of class

Every aspect of inquiry can be part of discovering oneself. The goal of this class is loosely to help students discover who they are as students. We'll read some philosophy about what makes individuals people the individuals they are. We'll read some other literary essays loosely connected to the topic, to varying degrees. And we'll read some poetry from W.H.Auden, sometimes out loud.

Learning Objectives

In College Seminars, students gain skills in: Setting and evaluating academic goals; Communicating effectively, both orally and in writing; Studying effectively; Thinking critically; Understanding standards of academic integrity; Knowing when and how to ask for help.

Class Materials (Required)

All class materials will be available on Canvas at NO cost to the student.

W.H. Auden, The Age of Anxiety; John Perry, Personal Identity, with readings from Locke, Butler, Reid, and Hume; other readings as well from George Orwell, James Baldwin, and Marilyn Robinson
