Overview of class

This course introduces the histories, theories, and cultural productions of Queer and Trans Latine (primarily in the United States). We will begin by examining the development of Queer and Trans Latino/a Studies, including the intersectional approaches of Black feminists, women of color feminists, and queer of color critique writing and activism. We will explore the construction of gender and sexuality as it intersects with race, class, immigration, and other relationships of power and categories. We will read classic texts in addition to contemporary research.

Learning Objectives

• Obtain a firm understanding of the formation of Queer and Trans Latinx Studies
• Obtain a comprehensive understanding of how social contexts and power structures shape Queer and Trans Latines/xs.
• Students will gain insight into how Queer and Trans Latine/x have utilized scholarship, art, and activism to express their perspectives on sexuality, and to address gender and sexual injustice in society and culture.
• Students will have the opportunity to co-create knowledge, further developing their writing skills and critical thinking abilities.
