Overview of class
In this first-year seminar, students will develop critical thinking and writing skill through an engagement with American superhero comics. We will use racial analytics to understand the origins and development of American pop culture icons, including the Green Lantern, Black Panther, the X-Men, and Ms. Marvel. Students will learn how race has inflected the development, style, and business of American comic heroes from their inception in the interwar period through to the present. This course will also introduce students to the ways and means of college-level learning. Students will practice research and writing skills, learn time management best practices, and cultivate strategies for success at the college level.
