Overview of class

Biology refers to the characteristics and processes of life and living organisms, as well as the discipline that studies these. In this seminar we cover a selection of topics in biology (cell biology, genetics, evolution, molecular biology, microbiology) and take an interdisciplinary approach to explore (1) the social, behavioral, and ethical aspects of the study of biology as a scientific discipline, and (2) the impact of cultural, political, and economic forces on biological phenomena such as infection and disease. A major focus will be the human stories behind the science using readings from press articles, academic literature, and non-fiction books.

Teaching Method

This is a discussion-based course with minimal lecture. Doing the readings and participating in the discussion, in class and online, will be critical to learning in this course.

Evaluation Method

Students will be evaluated by class participation, online discussions, and response papers. There is a final presentation in place of a final exam.
