Overview of class

Second-year Arabic will build on skills acquired in first-year Arabic. The course follows the integrated approach which blends the standard Arabic, Fuṣḥā, and the dialect or colloquial language, āmmiyya, in a way that reflects the authentic practice of native Arabic speakers. To develop reading and writing skills we will be using Modern Standard Written Arabic called Fuṣḥā will be used in reading and writing; an educated spoken version of the āmmiyya of the Levantine dialect will be used to develop speaking and listening skills we will be using. The integrated approach is an effective, logical, and economical method of instruction that successfully teaches the complexities of the Arabic sociolinguistic and diglossic situation and prepares students fully for the realities of the Arabic world.

Arabic 121-1, taught in the Fall quarter, is the first quarter of second-year Arabic and will build on material covered and practiced during first-year Arabic (the 111 sequence).

Registration Requirements

Arabic 111-3 with a C- or equivalent; or permission of the instructor (New students need to take the placement test before registering)

Learning Objectives

After completing Second Year Arabic, students will have an overview of Arabic grammar; this includes the root and pattern system, verbal patterns, and case markings of nouns. Students will have enough vocabulary to speak about themselves, family members and friends, their studies, trips, and wants and desires. Students will be able to read and comprehend basic authentic texts and write lengthier paragraphs with increased accuracy.

Teaching Method

Second-year Arabic uses a communicative, proficiency-oriented approach. Students will communicate with the instructor in Arabic and will practice new vocabulary and grammar concepts orally in class. The instructor will help students integrate new grammar rules to improve speaking and writing. Students will use class time to do group work in Arabic and get feedback on their speaking and pronunciation. Students will work intensively with the Fulbright teaching Assistant who will provide tutoring and additional out-of-class practice.

Evaluation Method

Homework, short quizzes, attendance and class participation are important, oral final presentations.

Class Notes

This class is taught in Arabic and meets three days a week MWF for 70 minutes. Attendance is mandatory and there is daily homework.
