Overview of class

Writing Late Night is an introduction to the world of writing and submitting late night comedy packets. "Packets" are writing portfolios of jokes and monologues, and sometimes sketches, in the voices of such late night TV shows as The Tonight Show, Late Night, The Late Show, SNL, and more recently, After Midnight. A background in improv, sketch, journalism, or stand-up is helpful, but not required. Assignments are writing-oriented, with students submitting their jokes weekly. Students will be asked to read their work out loud, but many late night writers are not performers, so performance will not be evaluated as part of grading. A final showcase of student work will cap off the quarter.
