Overview of class
In this course students will explore the historical and theoretical foundations of socially engaged art and develop performance-based interventions on pressing social issues of their choosing. As a genre, social art practice is concerned with applying the skills of artistic creation as tactics to engage audiences in critical and potentially transformative situations. We will analyze artwork focused on social change in a variety of genres such as performance art, art-activism, and theater. The goal of the course is to develop a multifaceted understanding of the social and aesthetic effects of socially engaged art practices and to rehearse techniques for the development of public performances. The course will alternate between lecture, discussion, self-directed research, artist visits, performance workshops, and participatory performances.
