Overview of class

The performance of Spanish and Italian song repertoire.

Registration Requirements

The class is open to juniors, seniors and graduate students. There is no permission number required for the class. The class is limited to 15 singers.

Learning Objectives

The objectives of the class are to widen the students' knowledge Spanish and Italian song repertoire.

Teaching Method

Each student will be assigned 3 songs to sing in class. They will coach each song with me privately before performing for their peers in class. The songs need to be well learned, but do not need to memorized. The students must write the IPA and literal translation into their scores, unless they speak the language of the text.

Evaluation Method

The students will be evaluated on the level of their preparation and performance of the assigned repertoire. They will also be evaluated on attendance, which is required at all classes, unless the student is ill, has a family emergency, has an audition or a performance. The students must notify me about any absence from class in a timely manner

Class Materials (Required)

There are no class materials for the students to purchase. All of the music to be studied is either in the public domain, available through the Northwestern Library or in my private library. Students will be provided with a study copy of any score that is not readily available.

Class Notes

A knowledge of Italian diction and IPA is essential for participation in the course.
