Overview of class

The class will cover aspects of music software and hardware through both practical and theoretical applications. Topics include acoustics, basic synthesis, and composition methods. Also, audio recording, mixing, and signal processing will be discussed in digital audio workstations (DAWs) such as Audacity, Logic, and Ableton. The goals of the class are to create an electronic music piece (in any style and aesthetic) as well as to acquire the necessary knowledge for further creative work.

This course replaces and is equivalent to MUS TECH 259 (Introduction to Music Technology).

Registration Requirements

Registration requires department consent. Priority is given to majors in the Bienen School of Music. You may apply for a place in either or both Fall 2024 sections of MUS TECH 300 with a single response at that link, but wait-list applications from previous quarters (for MUS TECH 259 or 300) do not carry over.

Learning Objectives

Students will understand and be competent with the principles and techniques working with MIDI and digital audio, how to create effective documentation of their own works, both acoustic and digital, how to communicate with an engineer, tools for creating a soundtrack to a movie.

Evaluation Method

Students will complete projects which will address the various requisite skills
