Overview of class

This course will examine the intersections of music and dance across a variety of cultural traditions from the turn of the twentieth century to the present. Topics include American musical theater, classical ballet, Latin dance styles, and more. The course will also center important choreographers and composers—such as George Balanchine, Jerome Robbins, Igor Stravinsky, and Leonard Bernstein—to examine how these creative figures conceptualized and created relationships between music and movement. Assessments include short biweekly listening journals, attendance and written reflection of at least one live performance, oral presentations, and a final project. Students are not required to have previous training in dance or music, though at least one of these would be beneficial.

Class Materials (Required)

Although readings and other supplemental materials will be available on Canvas in lieu of a required textbook, students will be expected to attend at least one dance performance or event. Students are responsible for ticket costs associated with these performances.
