Overview of class

This course will explore the many ways in which music, across history, has exerted a profound influence on and served as a reflection of our societies. We will adopt a thematic approach, delving into representative works from the Western classical music canon to contemporary compositions, with the historical contexts informing them. Students will be expected to engage in active listening, and to complete a variety of assignments, including written work, discussions, a final project, etc. No prior musical knowledge or experience is necessary.
