Overview of class
NOTE: A mandatory training for ALL students will take place on Sunday, September 29. There is an optional course component to pursue mediator certification with the Center for Conflict Resolution (CCR). Students pursuing certification must attend additional mandatory training on Saturday, October 5 and Sunday, October 6.
Pursuing certification with CCR is a pre-requisite for enrolling in the Mediation Practicum course taught during spring semester. Pursuing certification and enrolling in the practicum are optional and are not factored into grades for this course.
Learning Objectives
By the end of the semester, students will be able to:
Improve their skills in listening, questioning, and problem solving
Translate positions to interests
Distinguish major mediation models
Describe the benefits and pitfalls of in-person and online mediation
Identify effective mediator behaviors in the facilitative mediation model
Analyze advocacy skills to determine impact on mediation outcome
Promote appropriate use of mediation to potential users of mediation
Recognize areas for improvement in the field of mediation
Demonstrate creativity and innovation through problem-solving skills
