Overview of class
"This course familiarizes students with key political, social, and intellectual developments in the Middle East from the early eighteenth century to the present. Currents of political change affecting the Middle East are contextualized in broader global power struggles, secular and Islamic intellectual influences, social forces,
and economic history. Course material covers the heartlands of the Middle East, with particular reference to Turkey, Iran, Egypt, North Africa, Arabia and Israel/Palestine."
