Overview of class
This course provides a comprehensive introduction to music composition. Through the exploration of practical exercises, scholarly materials, and critical analysis, we will delve into the multifaceted aspects of creating original music.
Students will engage in hands-on, weekly composition assignments aimed at developing proficiency in foundational composition techniques, including written music notation and Digital Audio Workstations (DAWs). Through discussion and readings, we will engage with academic resources to contextualize compositional practices within broader musical frameworks; this includes scholarly materials on auditory science, music cognition, emotion and meaning in music, and topics in culture and society.
Students will deepen their listening and analytical skills to evaluate both one's own compositions and those of their peers. They will learn to discern structural and expressive elements within musical works, and practice articulating and defending compositional choices. Students should come to class with an open mind, ready to share their work and offer constructive feedback.
