Overview of class
This course provides students with the foundational tools necessary to engage with music from several sociocultural and historical contexts, including contemporary popular music, Western art music, and musical traditions from across the globe. After introductory sessions covering fundamental concepts that facilitate musical study, we will bring music into conversation with a range of topics such as gender, ethnicity, spirituality, national identity, film, and technology. Assignments will include reading, a listening journal, a brief written assignment, and a final exam. No prior musical training is required to take this course.
