Overview of class

The cycling of biogenic elements (C, N, S, Fe, Mn) in surficial environments is the focus of this course. Emphasis will be placed on microbial processes and isotopic signatures.

Registration Requirements

Prerequisite: 1 quarter of chemistry plus 1 quarter of either geoscience, environmental science, or biology. Taught with CIV ENV 317; students may not earn credit for both courses.

Teaching Method

Lecture and discussion, problem sets and a final paper and presentation.

Evaluation Method

Progress in the course will be monitored by a series of problem sets and a final writing assignment. The final writing assignment will be a research proposal. The grades will be weighted in the following manner:

Problem sets: 70%
Proposal: 30%
