Overview of class

This class will examine the casting and audition process for screen
performance. Students will prepare and participate in mock casting sessions,
examining the process from both sides of the camera. From a casting standpoint,
we will address how to choose audition material from a script, how to work with
actors in the room, and the secondary stages of chemistry reads and callbacks.
From a director/producer standpoint, we will address creating and
communicating a vision to casting and actors. From an actor standpoint, we will
investigate how to prepare copy for auditions, including identifying the "world of
the play" (genre, tone, and style), the collaboration between actor and director in
working with copy, and the journey from first audition to booking. We will also
address diversity in the casting process, and how all collaborators can proactively
participate.

Learning Objectives

Students will gain technical, artistic, and experiential
knowledge of the audition and casting process and address the responsibilities
and needs for the creative roles on both sides of the camera.

Teaching Method

While there will be some information presentation, the bulk of
class will consist of active exercises in front of and behind the camera, using
relevant and recent teleplays and screenplays as the basis for both performance
work and directorial and casting preparation. On camera exercises will be
captured in class, to be viewed both in class and at home.

Evaluation Method

Preparation for and participation in class exercises,
completion of reading and viewing assignments, engagement in class discussion
and constructive critique.

Class Materials (Required)

Scenes, sides, and scripts will be provided electronically and in
person, in addition to links to required readings and on screen material for
viewing. (There is no outside cost to the student or special materials or software
required other than a computer that can play videos.)
