Overview of class
Non-technical, chronology from first recordings (1917) through early ‘40s peak popularity. Rise of major soloists from Armstrong through Christian; early New Orleans and Chicago music and convergence with commercial dance bands (Henderson, Ellington, Goodman); role of race in context of rigid social segregation. Emphasis on the pre-1942 repertoire (see www.jazzstandards.com). Non-jazz majors welcome. Knowledge of the American Song Book useful.
