Overview of class
This course provides students with an introduction to the structure of film and other audiovisual media and explores both film techniques and grammar. We will define and examine the expressive and aesthetic power of the basic elements of the moving image such as cinematography, mise-en-scène, editing and sound. We will further analyze the forms of film and television narrative, the formulas associated with specific genres and the concept of "medium specificity," which is the conventions and formal elements that make the kinds of media produced in and for these varied formats distinct and recognizable. Finally, we will discuss non-narrative and non-fiction media including different modes of documentary and experimental filmmaking.
