Overview of class
This course is a general survey of early 20 century Russian Literature, focused on the interplay between culture and politics. Texts include great Modernist novels -- Petersburg (1913) by Andrei Bely; Master and Margarita (1940) by Mikhail Bulgakov; We (1921) by Evgeny Zamiatin; and poetry by Aleksandr Blok, Vladimir Mayakovsky, and Velimir Khlebnikov. These major literary works are discussed in the broad Russian, Eurasian, and global cultural and historical context. Students will develop skills in critical literary analysis to unlock the thrills of reading Russian modernist novels.
