Overview of class

This graduate seminar will ask how scholars have defined and studied "the state" in the United States and discuss exemplary historical scholarship in the field.

Learning Objectives

Students will analyze varied approaches to studying the state, examine the many facets of the state itself, and develop their own perspectives on the challenges of studying the US state as well as the opportunities afforded when the state is part of historical analysis.
