Overview of class

This course introduces students to German literary history of the first half of the 20th century - from symbolism and naturalism at the beginning of the century through several modernist, radical movements to the literary field at the time of Nazi rule. This will be achieved by discussing the rapidly changing historical and literary environments, but mostly through the examination of representative texts (poetry, prose, and drama). The class will give students ample opportunity to practice the close reading of literary texts and the analysis of complex works of art in a foreign language (which can be fun!).
