Overview of class

In this class, we will study the art of improv in its many modes and forms and how it may intersect and disrupt one's writing practice. Drawing inspiration from artists across mediums who have used improv and aleatory techniques (musicians, visual artists, choreographers, actors, film directors) we will explore how to improv (and improve!) our writing with a variety of improvisatory methods. Through readings, viewings, and written and performed games we will explore how improvisation can enliven, fracture, and break our writing so that it crackles and surprises just like conversations in real life. Students will create a self-directed project of their choosing. Past examples of these include a selection of short stories, a smattering of micro-fictions, a TikTok character, a short film, a web series, etc.

Enrollment Requirements: Students must have completed RTVF 260-0 in order to register for this course (concurrent registration is not allowed)
