Overview of class

This course is a junior research seminar where students will conduct ethnographic fieldwork around a networked group of their choosing and write a research paper based on their observations. The course will combine theoretical and practical discussions around the discourse and practice of using digital ethnographic methods to conduct research. Through discussions around concepts like the virtual and the real and the dimensions of space, temporality, politics, and ethics of studying digital worlds, students will form a critical understanding of how power and technology influence social formations in digital spaces.
