Overview of class

In this course, we will take a case study approach to the issues, trends, and innovations across sports. Class topics will include entertainment and popular culture, issues of equality in sports, college athletics, place marketing, sports celebrities, the Olympics, betting and investing, NFTs, and crisis management. Students will be divided into small groups of 4-5 in the first week of class, and together will choose a topic in Sports Marketing that they want to research throughout the quarter. Each week, the first half of class will be devoted to an engaging lecture accompanied by a video presentation from Professor Rein. After a short break, the second half of class will provide students with the opportunity to share their thoughts on that week's topic, as well as discuss questions and progress on group projects. Over the course of the quarter, students will read The Sports Strategist: Developing Leaders for a High-Performance Industry by Irving Rein, Ben Shields, and Adam Grossman. Additionally, there will be relevant articles and papers to read, and videos to watch, each week.
