Overview of class

This course covers the basics of composition, songwriting, music production, musical analysis, and notational approaches with the goal of developing or strengthening your music-writing process. Students will engage with a variety of musical topics through assignments including readings, listening/analysis, composition/songwriting exercises, and other smaller exercises with the end goal of writing and recording or performing a full piece of original music (in any style) by the end of the quarter. Prior knowledge of composition or music theory is not required. However, students will be required to perform or otherwise realize their composition assignments in class, so proficiency on a musical instrument or DAW is encouraged. Students should come to class with an open mind, ready to share their work and offer constructive feedback for their peers. The course does not focus on any single genre of music.

Class Materials (Suggested)

It is highly recommended that students have either a laptop or desktop computer capable of running digital audio workstation (DAW) and/or notation software.

Please note: phones and tablets are unable to run these programs and therefore are not a suitable alternative to a laptop/desktop computer.
