Overview of class

This seminar serves as a broad introduction to the emergence, development and evolution of journalism in the United States. We will explore the political, historical, economic and technological context for both change and continuity in the American news media and the practice of journalism over time. The seminar will also explore the workings of various aspects of the current media landscape including media economics, patterns of media coverage, the impact of technological change on media organizations and products, the evolving nature of audiences and the question of media effects.
