Overview of class

This course will explore the art of telling stories. In this class, we'll talk about finding story, about reporting and of course about writing, about how one goes about making sense of the tale at hand. Students will learn the kind of deep, intimate reporting required for magazine features, and will learn how to piece together a story so that it feels both literary and compelling. Students will work on a longer feature (with approval from the instructor you can pursue projects already underway), along with a couple of shorter writing assignments which we will workshop in class. We will also read some of the best nonfiction writing out there, and dissect those stories so we can come to understand how a writer builds a story, from conception to writing. It's my hope that by the end of the quarter, students will emerge as more accomplished storytellers and writers.
