Professor Christine Percheski (PhD, Princeton University) is an associate professor in Sociology and a faculty fellow at the Institute for Policy Research. Professor Percheski is enthusiastic about teaching courses on families, demography, gender, health, and research methods. Her research considers how changes in women and men¿s employment and family life have affected social and economic inequalities in the United States and other industrialized countries.

Overview of class

"Sociology of Families"

This course is designed to provide an overview of recent scholarship in sociology and the social sciences on contemporary families in the United States and other industrialized countries. We will focus on research that considers how families have changed over the last century and how the structure, functions, and experiences of family life vary across race/ethnicity, class, gender, sexual identity, and national context.

Course is open to Sociology graduate students. Anyone who falls outside of this description should contact the instructor for consent to enroll.

Learning Objectives

1) Describe how families in the U.S. and other industrialized countries have changed over the last century; summarize trends in living arrangements, coupling, and fertility for the population of the U.S. and for population subgroups defined by race/ethnicity and social class.
2) Evaluate possible causes of changes (and stability) in families and family relationships.
3) Assess key debates among scholars studying contemporary families in the U.S. and other industrialized countries.
4) Identify neglected topics in contemporary scholarship in sociology of families.
5) Critique how social scientists study families, identify the limitations of our research methods, and design methods of investigating research questions about families and family relationships.
6) Be prepared to teach an undergraduate course on sociology of families.
