Overview of class

This course is designed to introduce students to new methods in machine learning as they apply in the social sciences and especially in political science. The course will examine topics in both supervised and unsupervised learning, and investigate in particular the ways that these approaches are used with text as data. Students will learn techniques for collecting and analyzing data with these methods using R.

Registration Requirements

POLI_SCI 403 & 405 or equivalent and familiarity with R, or instructor consent. A prior course in maximum likelihood estimation or Bayesian inference is helpful, but any student willing to work hard is welcome.
