Overview of class
This class extends contents of BiolSci240 by taking a more detailed look at the properties of biological macromolecules and by discussing select biochemical topics including chemical evolution, membrane transport processes, enzyme catalysis, biological signaling, chemical logic of metabolic reactions, and select cellular pathways.
Registration Requirements
Prerequisites: General Chemistry 171, 172 Organic Chemistry Chem 212-1, BiolSci 240 (no exceptions)
Teaching Method
The class meets daily and is centered around interactive lectures. Additional 1:1 meetings can be arranged with the instructor as needed. Students should expect this class to be immersive and highly interactive at times. Active participation is strongly encouraged.
Evaluation Method
One group assignment, 3 quizzes, 1 midterm, and 1 final exam to be given at a time that works for all students. Content of quizzes/exams will be cumulative throughout including material taught in BiolSci240. At a technical level, all assessments are open response, evaluating proficiency based on demonstrated knowledge, ability to conceptualize and the ability to solve problems. As for 240, grades are aligned with an established performance standard that will be posted ahead of the course. No P/N for this section.
Class Materials (Required)
All required class materials will be provided by the instructor.
Class Notes
A compilation of specific topics that students ideally would be familiar with at the beginning of the class will be made available on Canvas. No P/N for this section
