Topic

Elemental Film/Experimental Film

Instructors

John Paul Sniadecki

Meeting Info

Louis Hall 105: Wed 5:00PM - 8:50PM

Overview of class

In this new advanced seminar, we will work in 16mm and digital filmmaking to explore the possibilities within cinema to uniquely incorporate the devotional (mindfulness & spiritual) and the elemental (ecological & ontological). Screenings and readings will offer a diverse range of non-commercial filmmaking approaches and engage with topics such as climate crisis, the crisis of representation, phenomenology, portraiture, and more. In addition to weekly assignments, students will be expected to produce a final project.

Registration Requirements

Although this is a graduate-level seminar, advanced undergrads may register with instructor permission/approval.

Learning Objectives

Students will become more adept at 16mm film production and gain support in a noncommercial and critical approach to filmmaking. They will also engage with readings and film screenings that present non-extractive, non-exploitative approaches.

Class Materials (Required)

  • Devotional Cinema by Nathaniel Dorsky ($12 paperback)

  • Film stock, processing, and scanning will be provided for assignments, but with a limit, so if you anticipate wanting to purchase more film stock beyond the allotted amount, please budget accordingly
