Overview of class

This course will broadly examine the cultural, social, and scientific relationships between sonic experiences and healing, most especially through music. Guided in part by readings such as Oliver Sacks's Awakenings and Daniel Levitin's This Is Your Brain On Music, we will consider a wide range of historical and contemporary case studies, such as the impact of Tibetan singing bowls on stress levels, the relationship between 'New Age' music and meditation since the 1970s, and the use of music therapy interventions for hospital patients requiring high levels of care. Our work will be informed by readings and media from a diversity of subject areas, including cultural anthropology, neurology, sociology, music education, musicology, and music therapy. This course will make no assumptions about the topic; students will instead be required to explore and reflect on their own knowledge of sound, music, and healing through lively discussions, careful reading and writing, regular journaling, and thoughtful listening. No prior musical experience is required; curiosity and an open mind are encouraged.
