Overview of class

This course aims to ease some of the transitions that you will experience in your first quarter at Northwestern by defining, exploring, discussing, and reflecting on your own experiences. By reading and discussing novels, essays, short stories, and works of journalism that take up the theme of life transitions, we will work together to cultivate productive study habits and to hone your critical thinking, reading, writing, and research skills for Northwestern classes. Our class will serve as a social support system, as we work generously with one another through seminar discussion and a routine exchange of writing.

Learning Objectives

Course Objectives
1. Prepare you to locate and utilize resources related to your academic, personal, social, and health needs on campus (and, for now, virtually).
2. Clarify professors' broad expectations of student writing at the undergraduate level and provide instruction on how to achieve those expectations.
3. Demystify commonly held assumptions about college and higher education.
4. Rethink traditional college academic expectations by experimenting with "ungrading."

Student Learning Objectives:
1. Recalibrate critical reading, writing, thinking, and research skills for college-level study.
2. Cultivate the speaking and listening skills necessary for college-level seminars.
3. Develop personal study habits and routines that will help you excel across the curriculum at Northwestern.
4. Acquire professional and social communication skills particular to college.
5. Practice methods of self-care grounded in writing and personal reflection.
