Overview of class
How do artworks have, contain, generate or coerce meaning/s? And what is meaning? Lectures, readings, discussion. Lectures will cover the basics of theory and criticism. A crash course: aesthetics, hermeneutics, humanism, semiotics, psychoanalysis, ideology, post colonialism, phenomenology. Readings will pair philosophers/theorists with artists/critics. Here, more contemporary concerns will be covered: post humanism, antisocial queer theory, Afropessimism, performativity, etc.
