Overview of class

The fall-quarter Keyboard Skills course for piano majors expands reading skills with a focus on two genres, string quartet and four-part vocal score. String quartet score reading prepares students for scores larger than the traditional two-staves piano score. The vocal or SATB score develops flexibility and provides skills for working with choirs. Harmonizing melodies or composing mini-pieces will synthesize the proper realization of chord symbols with creative application of patterns. A project involving a guided approach to sight-reading along with recognition of the integral role of changing rhythmic values in a piece will span several weeks in the form of a sight-reading journal.
