Overview of class

Doctoral Music Research combines a survey of resources used most commonly in music research with an introduction to approaches for evaluating and expressing ideas about music. The knowledge and skills developed in this course provide students in the Doctor of Musical Arts and Ph.D. in Composition programs with fundamental abilities in research and written expression that can be applied and built upon in other coursework, as well as throughout a career in music.

Learning Objectives

Use library catalogs and databases to find music in notated and recorded formats
Use library catalogs and databases to find information about music in books, articles, and other scholarly sources
Compare and contrast scholarly writings on music
Formulate bibliographic citations according to a style guide
Develop the foundational resources and preliminary strategies for an original research project
Identify Northwestern services that provide academic and career support
