Overview of class

That was then. This is now. What's next? This class will explore the history of video journalism, the current state of the industry or industries that fall under its umbrella and what might be coming next.

It will also give students a grounding in ethics specific to video journalists such as access and recording rules and laws, fair use and copyright scenarios, embargoes and industry regulations. Students will learn about writing for the ear, i.e., writing specifically for video and audio. They will get exposure to a broadcast studio, and they will hear from many of Medill's video faculty about issues pertaining to his or her expertise.

Students will be asked to read articles and book chapters and watch videos and documentaries that will help them think critically about the seismic changes happening in video journalism and the issues those changes raise for journalists and audiences alike.
