Overview of class
Overview of ethical and legal issues affecting journalism, as not everything that is legal is ethical. The course addresses issues of libel law, privacy, relationships with sources, reporter's privilege claims, copyright, social media usage, and governmental actions impacting the press. Materials include the basics of the First Amendment, as well as statutes and significant court cases concerning journalism. The objective of the class is to provide practical advice to journalists regarding ethical and legal issues which they will confront in gathering and reporting the news.
