Overview of class
This course is a review of tonal music theory that is the basis of more advanced study. Through analysis, part-writing, melody harmonization, and figured-bass realization, we will explore the diatonic foundations of tonality, and trace how composers extended diatonic harmony to create chromatic resources during the 19th century.
By the end of the course, you should be able to harmonize melodies and realize figured bass in four-part chorale style; construct and analyze harmonies; and identify some basic aspects of musical form.
