Overview of class

The class will explore critical approaches to digital art music (1960s to the present), emphasizing historical and aesthetic context, as well as reverse engineering strategies. Analytical models will draw from a series of computer works by Xenakis, Chowning, Smalley, Truax, Koonce, and others. Topics covered include digital musique concrete, algorithmic composition, and spectralism. Assignments consist of analytical papers and presentations.
