Overview of class

This course examines how musicians organize to create artistic communities and opportunities outside of various institutional structures. We will discuss notable organizations/collectives that have forged unique artistic and social paths, such as Bang On A Can, the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM), Wandelweiser, and New Discipline, among others. In addition to addressing some of the socio-economic and political profiles each of these groups embody, we will discuss and analyze the music and broader aesthetic profiles of each group as well. While much of the course will focus on engaging with these groups historically, we will also discuss potential strategies to enact in the present and future.
