Overview of class
This course will explore women's musical roles in Western society from the early 16th century to the present. The class is designed to introduce students to a variety of musical genres and to women's participation within a broad range of specific musical cultures. We will consider specifics of women's musical lives, such as performance, composition, and education, alongside changing constructs of femininity. Students will be evaluated through a combination of synchronous and asynchronous online work including reading, discussion, listening assignments, reflections, and a final project.
